In the Depths

The site was like many of the deep-dark sites. Hidden in the middle of a field, with a certain amount of magic protection in it, first to make the field look fallow and uninteresting, and second to turn people back who were there innocently - odd noises, funny smells, a sense of trespass and impending threat - and finally open threats against anyone who continued on. Compressed breathing, physical pain, confusion. They were easy enough to ward against, if you knew what was there, but the security would detect them the moment they hit the front edge of the magic.

Which was why they blew everything up the first moment, just to be done with it.

Ethan and Shack set charges at the corners of the property, going all the way around it to do it, while Dr. Finn and Mr. Marve put together the rolling offense that would bulldoze anything between them and the middle of the field. This time, it would be easy, because both Shack and Ethan knew these defenses like the backs of their hands, but the next time, they would need the heavy-duty casting that they were using this time, just for the practice - and to be sure. The Council could have anticipated this and changed things up.

This would be the one safe path in and out, and the men had planned on setting off the attack before Ethan and Shack got all the way back because they didn’t want to be here any longer than they had to be.

The wild grasses in the field, dry with winter cold, crisped and blackened, some of them showing active red embers as the magic burnt off of everything around them, and the air filled with the smell of smoke.

“Wasn’t expecting that,” Ethan said as he pulled even with Shack and continued after Dr. Finn and Mr. Marve at a fast walk. Alert and in control.

“Half of the stuff Sasha crammed in at the end was too unstable to test on campus,” Shack said. “I’m glad the ground is still flat.”

Ethan grinned, and Shack shoved him with his elbow.

“Head in the game?” Ethan’s roommate asked.

“Head in the game,” Ethan agreed, taking out his first two casts and throwing the first off to the side. He and Shack sped up again as it went off, an actual physical explosion that would penetrate the ground thirty or forty feet down, or until it hit bedrock. For deeps that were dug into the bedrock, they had different plans, but this one was just below the surface of the field, one
